The Corsican grape Sciacarellu is often fairly hard to come by, and until recently we’ve only ever found it used as a blending grape in small percentages. But Domaine Giacometti offers a varietal bottle in their Sempre Contentu, and we were quite eager to try this one out as soon as we received it.
For lovers of a warm climate Pinot Noir, this grape should definitely be on your radar as it is quite similar!
Fresh and Fruity Sciacarellu from Corsica
This Sciacarellu from Corsica was pale ruby in color with medium(+) aromas of red cherry, wet leaves, cassis, plum, cranberry, clove, blueberry, thyme, and cacao.
On the palate it was dry with high acidity and alcohol, medium(+) chalky tannin and flavor intensity, and medium body and finish. We had notes similar to the nose like red cherry, raspberry, cassis, dried leaves, cola, black pepper, and blueberry.
This one was very reminiscent of a Pinot Noir, but perhaps one from a warmer New World climate due to the high alcohol. It hit some of the right notes for us and was an easy drinker despite being slightly on the lighter side (where the alcohol brought the it up in body considerably, of course).
Sciacarellu Food Pairing – Burgers
We paired this refreshing red wine with homemade burgers topped with cheese, bacon, and an array of traditional toppings. The rich burger included a blend of lamb in it for a slightly gamey note, and all around the juicy and decadent burger helped bring out more black pepper and cherry notes in the wine while cutting back the noticeable tanning and slight dark fruit notes.
We really can’t complain with this pairing, because rich meat and a fruity red wine always are a classic match.
Score: 3 / 5
We’d buy a glass of this one.
Overall, this fruity red wine from Corsica hit a number of notes for us that made us put it along the lines of a warm climate, new world Pinot Noir. That said, this one came in at a slightly higher price tag than we normally would like in the USA, so as such we would likely stick with a glass if we ever found it on a menu. But if you can get your hands on it for a reasonable amount wherever you are, do not overlook this one for something just a bit different.
