Colombia vs Argentina Prediction: Unbeaten Colombia can cut the gap
Colombia host Argentina in a South American World Cup qualifier on Tuesday, 10th September. The duo face off in a heavyweight clash which kicks off at 21:30 at Estadio Metropolitano Roberto Melendez in Barranquilla, Colombia.
Argentina strengthened their position at the top of the table last week with a 3-0 success at home to Chile, but they face a tricky trip to Colombia, who remain unbeaten after their 1-1 draw away to Peru. Read on for my Colombia vs Argentina prediction, as well as team news and match odds.
Colombia vs Argentina Betting Tips
Team News
Colombia goalkeeper David Ospina and centre-back Davinson Sanchez are injured but playmaker James Rodriguez was a half-time substitute in the 1-1 draw away to Peru and is pushing for a return to the starting eleven.
Legendary Argentina captain Lionel Messi is recovering from an ankle problem. Defenders Nicolas Tagliafico and Leonardo Balerdi and midfielder Exequiel Palacios are also sidelined with injuries.
Colombia are 13/8 to maintain their unbeaten status with a home win and 15/8 to take a share of the points. Argentina are 13/8 to register a seventh win in eight qualifying games.
Both teams to score can be wagered at 11/10 and a 1-0 home victory is quoted at 11/2.
Colombia to win @ 13/8
Colombia experienced an agonising 1-0 extra-time loss to Argentina in this year’s Copa America final but they can gain a measure of revenge by defeating the Albiceleste in a World Cup qualifier in Barranquilla.
There was very little to choose between the teams this summer and Los Cafeteros will fancy their chances of prevailing on home soil.
Argentina have piled up 18 points from seven qualifiers but they showed some vulnerability on matchday five when losing 2-0 at home to Uruguay.
Lionel Scaloni’s side travel to Colombia without their inspirational captain, Messi, and may struggle to cope with their talented hosts, who are looking to maintain the only unbeaten record in the section.
Bet Builder – Jhon Duran to score anytime, Colombia to keep a clean sheet and under 2.5 goals @ 9/1
Colombia head coach Nestor Lorenzo hasn’t got much wrong in recent years but he might have erred by leaving Rodriguez and Jhon Duran out of his starting line-up for the weekend’s 1-1 draw away to Peru.
Both players came off the bench in Lima as Los Cafeteros came from behind to salvage a share of the points, but they should be given more prominent roles against Argentina and are likely to have a major influence on the game.
Duran has impressed for Aston Villa this season, netting twice in three Premier League games, and has every chance of scoring past his club-mate, Emiliano Martinez.
There will be plenty of attacking talent on both sides, but one goal may prove to be decisive.
Colombia have kept clean sheets in four of their seven qualifiers and they might be capable of shutting out an Argentina side weakened by Messi’s absence.
