Bears vs Chargers History

These teams haven’t played since 2019 with Los Angeles winning 17-16 in Chicago. The Bears have won six of the past eight games but these teams rarely play and even looking at the past six games takes you back to 1993.

Tyson Bagent Gets First Prime Time Game on Sunday

With Justin Fields out of action last week, up stepped Division II rookie quarterback Tyson Bagent to lead the Bears last week. And while he didn’t do anything special dinking and dunking for just 2.1 air yards per throw for just 162 yards and one touchdown, it was enough for the Bears to get their second win of the season, defeating the Raiders 30-12.

If Bagent were to pull off another win this week to start his career 2-0, he’d become only the second undrafted rookie QB to do so since 1950.

Now that win has the caveat of the Raiders also being without their starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. That left them with the duo of Brian Hoyer and Aidan O’Connell who combined for 204 yards, 1 TD and 3 INTs.

Chicago’s only other win came against the Commanders, 40-20, while their five losses have come by 18, 10, 31, 3 and 6 points.

The Bears have averaged 22.6 PPG (13th), but when it comes to yards per game, most of their offense was coming on the ground. They rank fifth in rushing YPG but only 27th in passing YPG. With 237 rushing yards, Fields is the team’s second-leading rusher, so that strength will be diminished in his absense.

Defensively, the Bears have been getting carved up, allowing 26.9 PPG to rank 28th. Against the pass, they’re 29th, but against the run they’re an impressive fifth.

Is Brandon Staley’s Job on the Line on SNF?

If the answer to the above question isn’t a resounding “yes”, than perhaps the jobs of management should be.

The Chargers have talent all over their roster and Brandon Staley has just a 21-19 regular season and 0-1 record in the playoffs with the team.

Los Angeles came out with two straight losses before evening their record to 2-2 with wins over the Vikings and Raiders, before dropping losses in the past two weeks to the Cowboys and Chiefs. The Chargers never led last week in Kansas City and went on to lose 31-17.

But this should be a week this Chargers offense that is averaging 24 PPG (11th) should be able to come alive. They have been struggling with two scoreless second halves in two of the past three games.

LA is mid-pack when it comes to rushing YPG at 16th, but their passing game is putting up the eighth-most yards per game. Versus a 29th-ranked Bears secondary, Staley and Herbert need to take advantage.

But the Chargers defense has been every bit as poor as Chicago’s giving up 26.9 PPG (25th). They’re worst in the league against the pass (32nd) and 11th versus the run.

If this was Fields under center for Chicago, this game would look to have “Over” written all over it.

Bears vs Chargers Prediction

And the Bears have been money-makers for Over bettors all season cashing Over tickets at the highest rate at 6-1. The Chargers meanwhile have played to four straight Unders and are 2-4 to the Under overall. Wondering how to bet the NFL over/under? Follow that link for all you need to know about betting on NFL totals.

The Bears have actually been profitable for their backers in recent weeks in the NFL ATS records being 2-1 ATS, despite being 2-4-1 overall.

The Chargers are on an 0-2 SU and ATS slide and have gone Under their game total in four straight after going Over in the first two weeks.

They also actually have the most losses by three or more points (12) since 2020.

It has been eight games since the Chargers have beaten someone by over seven points, that coming against the Rams on January 1 last season. They’ve also only done so twice in their past 20 games. But if this isn’t a spot for those NFL team trends to end, I don’t know when it will be.

The Chargers should be a great teaser play if you’re looking to make a safer bet, but for our SNF picks, we’ll take LA in the Bears vs Chargers odds as well.
