Six flat races from the unique flat racing track at Chester, one of the oldest in the world. Tight turns, low draws are a fabulous bonus, and you never feel far from the action as a spectator. The Roodee – a stunning spectacle on any raceday.
We’ve got five handicaps, and a restricted novice. A reasonable number of runners, but in fairness a little on the slim side. Trainer Tom Dascombe is generally to be reckoned with at this venue but has just one entry – Innvincible (with two ns) Friend, in the 6.20. It’s a course and distance scorer, but could have been better housed than stall 8 in this 6f contest.
Top trainers, and others who do well here, are present; among them Andrew Balding, Charlie Hills, Charlie Johnston, and Hugo Palmer. Jack Channon is here, too – did us a lovely favour with an easy 11/4 winner at Catterick on Wednesday.
Jockey David Probert does well here too and has four booked rides to try and maintain that record. Thirteen are scheduled to line up for the tricky-looking lucky last so I hope we’re in good shape before then! As getting out stakes races go I’m not sure it’s going to be terribly user-friendly.
Right – time to nail our colours firmly to the mast with a couple who we hope can run well for us on Friday evening.
Selections;
6.55 Havanarama
A Hugo Palmer youngster by the prolific Havana Grey, and ridden by the fabulous Hayley Turner. Starts handicap life in this nursery off a mark of 68, and while his three efforts so far have been ordinary, that’s so often the case at this stage of the life of a 2-yr-old.
Hasn’t arguably had the best luck-in-running so far, and a tongue-tie is added for this third trip to Cheshire. He’ll at least be familiar with Chester’s unique contours. It’s Hayley’s first assignment on top, and perhaps she can unlock a winning performance.
8.05 Lihou
A very consistent 7-yr-old for trainer David Evans, and boasts a previous course win. So important if your selection has a bit of form around here.
In very competitive order recently, finishing consistently in the places apart from an ill-fated trip to Epsom to contest the red-hot ‘Dash.’ Just 27 days ago he failed by a whisker to win here in a better race than this, and claimer Owen Lewis take off a handy 7lb.
This could just be a fitting reward for that excellent consistency, though stall 6 isn’t the best. Great chance nevertheless.
Have a lovely evening in and around gorgeous Chester, whether lucky enough to be there, or viewing from wherever. I’ll certainly be tuning in.
