Chelmsford City Tips: You can call me what you like!

An eight-race card to look forward to on Tuesday, at Chelmsford.

Action takes place on the all-weather Polytrack from 17.00 – 20.30.

Rossa Ryan, Billy Loughnane, Hayley Turner, David Probert, Richard Kingscote – some tremendous jocks are here, and a cracking afternoon/early evening is assured. Decent field sizes, competitive fare.

Chelmsford tips, Tuesday

  • 17.30 – Struck Gold @ 9/4
  • 18.30 – Justcallmepete @ 5/1

17.30 – Struck Gold @ 9/4

A one mile, Class 6 handicap for 3-yr-olds and upwards.

Rossa Ryan rides Struck Gold for trainer John Butler, and arrives here after winning cosily at Wolves over half a furlong further just a week ago. He’s had a run here before, in August, and performed perfectly creditably in the grade. A little break then followed, with that victory in the Midlands his second run back.

He’s got a 6lb penalty to overcome and that’s not easy anywhere, but especially tricky in the bargain basement grades, where so little often separates the combatants. However, the relative comfort of that last win, a first after several second-places, plus the booking of Ryan, gives plenty of cause for optimism.

18.30 – Justcallmepete @ 5/1

A very decent Class 3 sprint handicap; not a huge pot but some battle-hardened sprinters oppose in an ultra-competitive heat.

My selection Justcallmepete was just pipped at Kempton in a higher grade last time, under today’s pilot Dougie Costello. He’s able to run off the same mark (92), and he’s won here before, at this trip.

He’s 4 years old, but has a wealth of experience – and is admirably consistent. His current well-being is arguably up there with any levels previously achieved, and he must have an extremely bright chance of victory.

He’s the gelded son of a fabulous sprinter who used to be in the care of Roger Charlton – Bated Breath. He was fantastically consistent, too, so the apple’s not fallen far from the tree.
