Chelmsford City Tips: Famous silks to the fore once again

 | November 08 |

EIGHT races to look forward to on Chelmsford’s Polytrack all-weather surface on Thursday, Nov 9th.

Racing takes place between 17.00 and 20.30.

The highly-rated Billy Loughnane is present, and Richard Kingscote, too – plus we have very respectable field sizes.

Good, competitive sport looks assured.

17.00 – Mercury Day @ 7/4

Always lovely to see the iconic Dancing Brave, Enable, and Frankel silks in any setting. Here they are in Chelmsford’s opener on Thursday, courtesy of the Ralph Beckett-trained, Juddmonte-owned Mercury Day.

She’s a 2-yr-old filly, having her third career start. Bags of promise thus far – Newmarket and Catterick outings yielded respectable, narrow defeats, the last on heavy ground. Few 2-yr-olds appreciate that.

She’s by Time Test out of a Motivator mare – so stoutly bred then, thinking ahead to distances in excess of this 7f. Chelmsford’s home straight gives jockeys plenty of opportunity and time to organise their charges, and that promise of hitting the line strongly is totally realistic.

These are inexperienced horses, some of which haven’t run at all. My selection is housed with an excellent trainer, beautifully-bred, and has shown definite signs of ability. She’s had Newmarket’s Dip and Catterick’s deep ground to encounter thus far – now she has the scrupulously fair, flat expanse of Polytrack with which to confirm all that early potential. Huge chance for me.

20.30 – Skallywag Bay @ 13/2

Our selections bookend the card, as Skallywag Bay is favoured in the lucky last.

In a decent Class 4 sprint handicap, the selection bids to follow-up a win at Lingfield in an improved display last time. Jockey Alec Voikhansky is making the most of opportunities afforded by the Hannon yard, and this is his only mount on the card.

The 3-yr-old daughter of Havana Grey has been very busy this season and has rewarded connections with a couple of wins and several near-misses. Good attitude then, consistent on the whole, and looks to defy a 5lb higher mark in a contest a Class higher that at Lingers.

Competitive affair, but a powerful stable, horse in form, and a very talented claimer combine.
