The year’s final Major is upon us, as the best golfers on the planet tee it up at Royal Liverpool Golf Club for the British Open starting on Thursday. It’s been 10 years since this course hosted the event, with Rory McIlroy claiming the Champion Golfer of the Year trophy back in 2014. McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler are the co-favorites to win the British Open, but we’re not here to pick outright winners, rather make and miss the cut candidates.

McIlroy and Scheffler also boast the shortest odds to make the cut and the longest odds to trunk slam. The British Open routinely produces surprising missed cuts, and this year we’re expecting 2021 Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama to miss out on the weekend.

Matsuyama Enters With Middling Form
Let’s get this out of the way. Matsuyama is one of only 18 players to make the cut in all three Majors this year. In fact, dating back to 2019, he’s made the cut in 13 straight Majors. Nevertheless, despite the impressive Major run, his middling form suggests it will be a struggle to get through the cutline this week.
Hideki Matsuyama British Open Results – Last Three Starts
Year | Result |
---|---|
2022 | T68 |
2021 | MC |
2019 | MC |
Matsuyama missed the cut in his last start in Detroit, and has actually trunk slammed in two of his past three British Open starts. The one year during that stretch he did find the weekend, he flirted with last place finishing 68th overall. His links struggles extend to the Scottish Open as well, as he missed the cut in his lone appearance there last year.
Ball striking is Matsuyama’s calling card, but while his irons have remained hot this season, his off the tee play has fallen off. He’s lost strokes off the tee in five of his past six events, while also losing 2+ strokes on the green three times. Royal Liverpool should be a scoreable course if you can stay in the fairway, but that could be a challenge for Hideki given his erratic off the tee performance.
Pick: Hideki Matsuyama to Miss the Cut (+160)
Make the Cut Parlay
Switching gears now to the make the cut market, where we’ve put together a three-leg parlay, while trying to stay price sensitive. The wager starts with Robert MacIntrye, who fell just short of the Scottish Open title last week. MacIntyre has made the cut in all three of his British Open starts, with a pair of top-eight results.
Grew up dreaming of hitting shots like this. It wasn’t to be today but I gave it my all. Thanks everyone for the support….a day I’ll never forget ❤️🏴
— Robert MacIntyre (@robert1lefty) July 16, 2023
Next we’ll add Tom Kim, who’s excelled on links courses over a small sample size. Kim finished sixth last week at the Scottish Open, and made the weekend in his British Open debut in 2022. He’s averaged 1.77 total strokes gained on the field per round on links tracks, which is one of the highest marks in the field.
Sticking with excellent links results, let’s use Tony Finau as the anchor leg of this wager. He too has made the weekend in all three Majors this year, and has never missed the cut in six British Open starts.
Pick: Make the Cut Parlay (+178)
Morikawa vs Spieth H2H Matchup
Moving over to the 72-hole head-to-head matchup market, where Collin Morikawa is our target over Jordan Spieth. Both of these men have raised the Claret Jug in the past, but while Morikawa enters in solid form, Spieth’s game has abandoned him.
Morikawa vs Spieth H2H Odds
Team | Moneyline |
---|---|
Collin Morikawa | -120 |
Jordan Spieth | +100 |
Spieth has missed the cut in back-to-back events, and has trunk slammed in four of his past six tournaments overall. He ranks 73rd in the field in scoring over the past 12 rounds, and 81st in putting. Morikawa on the other hand, was the runner-up in his last start. He ranks third in the field in ball striking and strokes gained tee-to-green over the past 12 rounds, and sixth in scoring.
Pick: Collin Morikawa Over Jordan Spieth (-120)
