Baseball is back! And with that, we have some MLB player props to hammer with the return of games post All-Star break.

First up, we will be backing Charlie Morton to go over 6.5 strikeouts when his Atlanta Braves host the White Sox.

MLB Player Prop #1: Charlie Morton Over 6.5 Strikeouts

Charlie Morton isn’t known as being a huge strikeout pitcher, and he’s certainly no Spencer Strider, but for this spot he is a great bet to record at least 7 against the White Sox. For starters, he isn’t a bad strikeout pitcher by any means. Despite being 39 years old and in the MLB since 2008, his strikeout rate is still a respectable 26.1%. That ranks him 20th in the MLB, ahead of pitchers such as Aaron Nola, Shane McClanahan, and Gerrit Cole.

Looking at other advanced stats still shows a respectable to above-average strikeout pitcher. His K/inning is 1.14 (73rd percentile), swinging strike rate is 12.8% (73rd percentile), and his called strike + whiff rate is 31.2% (83rd percentile). Another reason I like backing Morton is because he consistently throws for roughly 100 pitches in a game, and is generally a good bet to pitch 6+ innings. In todays day in age with teams being overly cautious with the amount of work a pitcher has, it’s refreshing to have someone like Morton who is reliable to pitch deep into games.

As for the White Sox, I mentioned above that they strike out the 11th-most in the MLB against right-handed pitching, striking out 23.3% of the time. If you isolate to the last 14 days, that number skyrockets to 26.6%, which is the second-most in the MLB during that same span.

MLB Player Prop #2: Corbin Burnes Under 6.5 Strikeouts

For our second play of the day, we are going with another plus-money banger strikeout prop, this time taking an under and fading Corbin Burnes. Burnes had an excellent stretch from 2020-2022, but he has not been the same pitcher this year as he was the last three, especially from the strikeout department.

He had gone three straight seasons with a strikeout rate above 30%, but this year that number is down to 23.1%. His K/9 of 8.55 is also the lowest it has been in his career since 2018. Unsurprisingly, he has only recorded 7+ strikeouts once in his last four games, and in that game he had exactly 7.

The main reason I like fading Burnes, though, is because of the matchup. Since Elly De La Cruz made his debut on 6/6, the Reds have been on fire. They have the fifth-best WRC+, the 4th-best WAR, and a 21.5% strikeout rate, which puts them as the ninth-lowest in the MLB during that span.

Burnes actually just faced this Reds lineup and had a respectable outing, going six innings and only giving up two earned runs, but did go under the 6.5 strikeout number as well.
