Overwatch 2 Tier List Commentary

As always with our tier lists, we want to highlight that we believe that the player always matters more than the character you play as.

If you have an off-meta main that is working for you, by all means, no need to switch! Keep rocking it.

This list is more to understand if one of your characters is favorable in the current meta, or to help players that have run into a plataeu.

Quick Notes

New Tank Hero Hazard, 6v6 Role Queue experiment, and Winter Wonderland 2024! Season 14 brings us plenty of new content and some significant balance changes. First off, we have the newest dive hybrid Tank bringing a Downpour of aggression and disrupting the meta (See summary below “Best Tanks”). Universally, the Damage Role Passive has been tweaked once again:

Damage Role Passive

  • Debuff duration increased from 2 to 3 seconds.
  • Healing reduction increased from 20% to 25%.

Global Projectile Size Bonus

  • Hitscan radius large reduced from 0.08 to 0.07 meters.
  • Hitscan radius small reduced from 0.05 to 0.04 meters.
  • Projectile radius large reduced from 0.15 to 0.12 meters.

We are still primarily in a dive and mobility meta going into season 14. DPS heroes have been struggling to have the same impact on games as Supports and Tanks so this buff aims to increase their effectiveness. The Damage Role Passive favors heroes like Sojourn who can apply sustained damage over heroes like Widowmaker who focus on a single burst of damage.

Universal Changes:

  • Counter Picking
    • Swapping your hero hides your selection on the enemy scoreboard for 15 seconds.

Armor Changes

  • Armor flat damage reduction decreased from 10 to 7 per impact.
    • The reduction has previously changed from 5 to 10, now to 7.

Tank Role Passive:

  • Knockback resistance was reduced from 40% to 25%.
    • It was briefly 50% a few seasons back.
  • Ultimate generation reduction remains at 40%.

Damage Role Passive:

  • Remains only half as effective against Tank heroes.
  • 12.5% healing reduction was applied to Tanks.
  • Season 14 three second duration applies.

With all these changes in mind, let’s take a closer look at who the strongest heroes in each role are this season and what makes them so dominant.

Fundamental Differences from Overwatch 1

Since you’re here, there’s a good chance that you already know the core differences between Overwatch and Overwatch 2.

If not, know that there are some kit adjustments across the hero cast. Be sure to know what has changed for your hero pool before diving into ranked.

The other major change to know is that now, there are five players instead of six (sorry to all you sixth men and women out there). This means that there are now one tanks instead of two.

Although it depends on the comp and the map, in general, this means that there is a noticeable decrease in the amount of crowd control and shields in the game.

There will be less instances of just defaulting to deathball teamfights and more instances of skirmishes and duels that happen.

How tiers work

In S-tier, you’ll find the best heroes in Overwatch 2 which will be very present in almost all maps and comp combinations.

A-tier heroes are still great choices but tend to be present for fewer maps than S-tier characters in pro play. However, in some situations, A-tier characters might shine more than S-tier characters.

In B-tier, we’re continuing the trend of heroes that have lower overall presence and are even more specialized. Some heroes here are just worse versions or downgrades of heroes in a similar niche above them (such as Ashe usually being the better choice over Cassidy).

Lastly, we have the Situational batch of heroes in the C-tier section. These heroes are rarely seen in comparison to their peers and are usually pulled out for specific halves or holds on a very small pool of maps. If you’re having success with them, by all means, keeping playing them.

The Best Damage (DPS) Heroes

Tier Overwatch 2 Damage (DPS) Tier List
S Tracer, Widowmaker
A Sojourn, Echo, Ashe
B Cassidy, Pharah, Reaper, Genji, Junkrat, Mei, Soldier: 76, Torbjörn, Symmetra, Venture, Hanzo
C Sombra, Bastion

Tracer

After having Recall buffed last season, Tracer has been left untouched as she continues to dominate ranked games. Even in metal ranks, Tracer is doing quite well as no other DPS can position or play how she plays. Supports are extremely strong right now, and are enabling Tanks to control matches. The global projectile size decrease doesn’t affect her very much but the buff to the Damage Role Passive healing debuff significantly increases her impact.

Tracer excels at either eliminating the backline, or taking up their attention and resources. Against highly mobile enemies, Tracer simply stands in her own league in terms of being able to escape from, and chase down the enemy mobility abilities. Her ability to follow up on Tank aggression, and take away the enemy Tanks Support resources make Tracer viable in virtually every single match.

Widowmaker

For the last few months, Widowmaker has been terrorizing ranked games at every level of play. She is the most difficult DPS hero to contest given her insane advantage of ranged oneshot threat. The Sombra rework has made countering her much more difficult, and the Tank and Support meta still give her insane sightlines and positioning.

Sojourn Buffed then hotfix Nerfed

After just a few days of being clearly overpowered, Sojourn retains her Railgun buff, but has her energy charge rates nerfed. After a few seasons of being extremely underpowered, the devs have been giving Sojourn small buffs every season. With Railgun secondary fire getting a 20% damage increase this season, Sojourn returns as one of the best DPS picks. Disrupter Shot and primary fire are both excellent for applying the increased healing debuff to multiple targets. The mobility, consistency of damage, fight winning ultimate and versatility of positional play make Sojourn a must pick any time her damage stats are tuned high.

The Best Tank Heroes

Tier Overwatch 2 Tank Tier List
S Winston, Hazard
A Orisa, Reinhardt, Junker Queen, Zarya
B Doomfist, Ramattra, Sigma, Mauga
C Wrecking Ball, Roadhog

Winston

While Winston traditionally tends to have worse performance at lower ranks and gains increasing value the higher up the ranked ladder one climbs, his current state allows him to be dominant at every level of play. Especially with this season’s buff to hi Jump Pack damage, 225hp mobility heroes are like delicious peanut butter to Winston’s Jump Pack, charged Tesla cannon, melee combos.

The armor changes have been Winston’s best friend. As long as he manages his armor health, Winston no longer gets hard countered by heroes like Reaper, Bastion, and D.Va. The armor just soaks up the damage, while his Tesla Cannon ignores armor. Barrier Projector shuts down much of the enemy team’s countermeasures and is one of, if not the strongest Tank ability at the moment.

Hazard

Coming out of his play test and into his official launch in Season 14, Hazard had nearly every single ability buffed. These increases to damage and consistency together have made Hazard the most lethal Tank of season 14. His playstyle is a mixture of Winston and Doomfist, with the added benefit of being the only hero since Mei to have a Wall ability. Hazard is extremely versatile and pairs well with current meta team comps.

Correctly using Jagged Wall will be a determining factor in a Hazard player’s effectiveness. The ability is large enough to block most doorways and can be used to cut off entrance/escape for the enemies in order to secure eliminations. Equally effective is to use the wall defensively as a barrier to protect himself during an engagement.

Don’t forget to use his animation cancel combos for high bursts of damage, and quick elims on squishy targets!

  • Violent Leap → Bonespur (primary fire) → Violent Leap slash → Bonespur → Melee

The Best Support Heroes

Tier Overwatch 2 Support Tier List
S Juno, Brigitte
A Ana, Kiriko, Baptiste
B Lucio, Mercy, Moira, Lifeweaver
C Illari, Zenyatta

Juno

Despite heavy nerfs to her ranged healing and damage last season, Juno never fell off in terms of pick rate or overall power level. Her kit is simply too good to pass up, and Juno continues to see success on every map. Glide boost allows her to quickly reposition with an aggressive team. The only weakness Juno has is being vulnerable to dive attacks, but she’s always paired with a second support who can keep her alive through the attack while she pockets the rest of the team. Be conscious of the fact that her healing and damage numbers get cut in half at 35 meters and you’ll have no problem maximizing her output!

Brigitte

The dev’s noted that Brigitte healing out is a bit too high last season and this season they want to limit her Inspire uptime by reducing the duration by one second. Unless you are playing very passively you won’t even notice the change. Whip Shot is her primary Inspire triggering tool, which is also on a 4 second cooldown. The aspects of her kit making Brig so powerful recently was not Inspire uptime. Rather, the power of Brig is her ability to keep her fellow Support alive, shutting down enemy aggression and her ranged healing. Considering her prominence of being paired with Juno, Ana and Bap, we are definitely keeping Brig as an top tier Meta pick throughout season 14.
