Overwatch 2 Tier List Commentary
As always with our tier lists, we want to highlight that we believe that the player always matters more than the character you play as.
If you have an off-meta main that is working for you, by all means, no need to switch! Keep rocking it.
This list is more to understand if one of your characters is favorable in the current meta, or to help players that have run into a plataeu.
Quick Notes
Season 13 Update
Lots of big changes this patch! Ramattra and Sombra got reworks to their abilities, multiple maps have been reworked, new areas added, walls removed and staircases added. Juno’s healing and falloff damage/healing was heavily nerfed. Also a number of more minor buffs and nerfs have been made to other heroes as well. Going into Season 13 the previous Dive meta that dominated much of Season 12 has fallen off after multiple nerfs to heroes like D.Va and Winston, and a series of buffs to heroes like Orisa and Sigma.
Ramattra Rework Reverted!
Ramattra received the following changes to his Pummel ability in Nemesis Form at the launch of season 13:
Pummel
- No longer pierces barriers.
- Now deals 2.5x more damage to barriers.
As of the October 29th Hotfix patch, these changes have been reverted and Pummel returns to its regular functionality. This marks the fastest rework change and revision ever experienced in Overwatch’s history.
Hotfix Patch:
Pummel
- Reverted to pierce barriers again.
- No longer deals critical damage to barriers.
Sombra Rework
Sombra has not been particularly strong, and only time will truly tell if her rework has made her weaker or stronger. Losing permanent stealth and now only having access to 5 seconds of invisibility will certainly have a harder time flanking, staging and scouting, but she got Opportunist passive back so does have increased damage per second. Don’t expect to be seeing much Sombra this season as the community has a very negative view of the changes and Sombra players are being flamed as soon their teammates see them load into a game.
Universal Changes:
- Counter Picking
- Swapping your hero hides your selection on the enemy scoreboard for 15 seconds.
Carried forward from Season 12:
- Armor flat damage reduction decreased from 10 to 7 per impact.
- The reduction has previously changed from 5 to 10, now to 7.
Tank Role Passive:
- Knockback resistance was reduced from 40% to 25%.
- It was briefly 50% a few seasons back.
- Ultimate generation reduction remains at 40%.
Damage Role Passive:
- Remains only half as effective against Tank heroes.
- 10% healing reduction was applied to Tanks.
- 20% debuff applied to Supports and DPS.
With all these changes in mind, let’s take a closer look at who the strongest heroes in each role are this season and what makes them so dominant.
Fundamental Differences from Overwatch 1
Since you’re here, there’s a good chance that you already know the core differences between Overwatch and Overwatch 2.
If not, know that there are some kit adjustments across the hero cast. Be sure to know what has changed for your hero pool before diving into ranked.
The other major change to know is that now, there are five players instead of six (sorry to all you sixth men and women out there). This means that there are now one tanks instead of two.
Although it depends on the comp and the map, in general, this means that there is a noticeable decrease in the amount of crowd control and shields in the game.
There will be less instances of just defaulting to deathball teamfights and more instances of skirmishes and duels that happen.
How tiers work
In S-tier, you’ll find the best heroes in Overwatch 2 which will be very present in almost all maps and comp combinations.
A-tier heroes are still great choices but tend to be present for fewer maps than S-tier characters in pro play. However, in some situations, A-tier characters might shine more than S-tier characters.
In B-tier, we’re continuing the trend of heroes that have lower overall presence and are even more specialized. Some heroes here are just worse versions or downgrades of heroes in a similar niche above them (such as Ashe usually being the better choice over Cassidy).
Lastly, we have the Situational batch of heroes in the C-tier section. These heroes are rarely seen in comparison to their peers and are usually pulled out for specific halves or holds on a very small pool of maps. If you’re having success with them, by all means, keeping playing them.
The Best Damage (DPS) Heroes
Tier | Overwatch 2 Damage (DPS) Tier List |
---|---|
S | Widowmaker, Ashe, Tracer |
A | Echo, Mei, Cassidy |
B | Sojourn, Reaper, Genji, Torbjorn, Venture, Pharah, Junkrat, Symmetra, Sombra, Hanzo |
C | Soldier: 76, Bastion |
Snipers: Widowmaker & Ashe
Both DPS Snipers perform equally well with and against Orisa comps. Sight lines tend to be very open as Orisa doesn’t offer much defense for her team against sniper heroes. Widowmaker especially is currently dominating the top 500 and pro play due to all other heroes falloff damage severely limiting their long range potential. Which sniper to pick largely depends upon preference and mechanical skill as Ashe tends to generate more consistent value across all ranks as compared to Widow.
For Ashe, B.O.B. still has the Tank passives and got super buffed in the Sombra matchup because Hack only locks out B.O.B. for 3 seconds instead of the previous 10 seconds which is his entire duration. Snipers also don’t have to worry about permanently invisible Sombra hard flanking them anymore, which further increases their power and uptime.
Tracer
Tracer continues to hold her spot as the do everything on everymap meta pick for high rank and pro play. Even in metal ranks, Tracer is doing quite well as no other DPS can position or play how she plays. Supports are extremely strong right now, and are enabling Tanks to control matches. Tracer excels at either eliminating the backline, or taking up their attention and resources.
Against highly mobile enemies, Tracer simply stands in her own league in terms of being able to escape from, and chase down the enemy mobility abilities. Her ability to follow up on Tank aggression, and take away the enemy Tanks Support resources make Tracer viable in virtually every single match.
The Best Tank Heroes
Tier | Overwatch 2 Tank Tier List |
---|---|
S | Orisa |
A | Winston, Sigma, Ramattra, D.Va |
B | Junker Queen, Reinhardt, Doomfist, Zarya, Mauga |
C | Wrecking Ball, Roadhog |
Orisa
Say it ain’t so. We are once again in an Orisa Meta. If you watched any OWCS the past few weeks, you’ll have seen the pro meta shift to Orisa, and is now trickling down into our ranked games. The past few seasons Orisa had been viewed as a weaker Tank hero, so she has been slowly getting repeated small buffs. More importantly, however, the hard meta Dive Tanks keep getting nerfed, allowing Orisa to fill the power void.
Additionally, Juno has been the hard meta support, and with her insanely harsh range nerf, she will barely provide value in Dive and long-range comps, but will continue to be an unstoppable duo with Orisa. The Golden Horse also has favorable matchups against every Brawl Tank, and Brawl dominates tight engagements in all these Clash and Flashpoint maps. On maps with lots of high ground where Orisa can struggle a bit, the devs just added a bunch of staircases to give Orisa an even easier time clearing high-ground positions!
The Best Support Heroes
Tier | Overwatch 2 Support Tier List |
---|---|
S | Juno, Brigitte |
A | Ana, Kiriko, Baptiste |
B | Lifewaver, Lucio, Illari, Zenyatta |
C | Mercy, Moira |
Juno
Juno received heavy handed nerfs to her ability to provide support from long range.
- Falloff range reduced from 30-50 meters to 20-35 meters.
- Healing per projectile reduced from 6.5 to 6.
Because of these changes, Juno now needs to play much closer to her team. For most of season 12, she was hard meta, seen on every match and in every mode. In the current season, expect to see her in Brawl and Rush comps, but only situationally in Dive comps, and a weaker choice in Poke.
Nevertheless, Juno remains our pick for the #1 Support hero this season due to the incredible power of Hyper Ring and Orbital Ray. Pair her with Brig or Baptise, and any of her weaknesses seemingly disappear. Just remember healing and damage numbers will both be cut in half at ranges she was previously dealing full damage just last season so more often than not you’ll have to be even smarter with your positioning!
Brigitte
When viewing Supports in the traditional sense of main and flex, Brig is by far the best supporting Support. Her ability to keep her fellow supports alive and pocketing the rest of the team is unparalleled, and her range healing allows her a good deal of versatility.
Whether your team is running a brawl comp with Juno, or a dive comp with ana, Brig turns her easily-killable ally into an unkillable carry! The shield maiden doesn’t dominate by getting kills or outputting the most healing, but by excelling at shutting down enemy aggression.
Baptiste
Baptise got the strangest buff this season. He was already one of the stronger supports, and outputs extremely high damage. Still, the devs decided to significantly reduce his recoil and now Bap is melting heads.
The reduced recoil is just enough to tighten the spread of his tri-burst to make triple critical hitting a target more consistent. Moreover, he has always been a perfect match with the meta Tank, Orisa.
