Ayr Racecourse

Scotland’s premier racecourse, Ayr, hosts its biggest Flat meeting of the season this week, the three-day Ayr Gold Cup Festival. It all gets up and running on Thursday afternoon with an eight-race card from 13:42-17:23 that includes the Kilkerran Handicap at 15:42.

Our three tips include a filly for trainer Michael Bell who may still be well ahead of the handicapper after successive wins at Ripon.

Today’s Horse Races

14:42 Ayr – Water Of Leith @ 9/4

Scotland’s leading Flat trainer Jim Goldie is sure to send a strong team to Ayr’s flagship meeting and WATER OF LEITH could be among his best contenders on the opening day.

The Kodiac gelding registered his fourth turf success at Carlisle (6f, good) in early August and finished a highly creditable third in a five-furlong handicap at Doncaster’s St Leger Festival last week.

Claiming rider Amie Waugh appeared to have produced Water of Leith with a well-timed challenge up the Town Moor straight but they were overhauled by a pair of fast-finishers.

It was a good effort nonetheless and the two-time Ayr winner could land another valuable pot from an unchanged mark in a lower-grade contest.

15:42 Ayr – Have Secret @ 11/2

Richard Fahey and Oisin Orr could be a combination to follow over the next few days and HAVE SECRET appears to have a leading chance of success in the 1m2f Kilkerran Handicap.

The son of Havana Gold has put together a sound run of results this season without managing to get a win on the board.

His form figures for the year read 23362, which includes runner-up efforts at York in June and Chester this month, and the consistency of his runs is highlighted by the fact his handicap mark has barely deviated all summer.

Have Secret was forced to bide his time to make his challenge at Chester and he finished off better than most, only for Stressfree to finish with a wet sail and score comfortably.

A first-time visor is tried on Thursday and the four-year-old’s consistency should not go unrewarded for too much longer.

16:15 Ayr – Dancingwithmyself @ 11/4

A step up in trip has brought about plenty of improvement from DANCINGWITHMYSELF and Michael Bell’s filly probably hasn’t found her ceiling just yet.

Victorious over a mile at Chelmsford last year on her second start in novice company, runs at Kempton and Leicester on her return in May hinted that a longer distance would bring the best out of the daughter of Phoenix of Spain.

She duly got it at Ripon (1m2f, soft) in June and defied a lack of room to scoot clear and win well.

Dancingwithmyself had a break following that success but she returned to Yorkshire’s garden racecourse last month and ran out a comfortable winner over a mile and a half despite a 4lb rise in the weights.

She has another 6lb hike to contend with now but she can make it 3-3 in the hands of jockey Callum Rodriguez, who is in cracking form.
