France’s Fierro favored

While France isn’t exactly a surfing hot bed, Tahiti is French Polynesia’s largest island. Vahine Fierro (+275) is the gold medal favorite after becoming the first Tahitian local to win the Tahiti Pro as a wildcard back in May. The Tahiti Pro took place in Teahupo’o, which also happens to be the venue for the surfing competition at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The former WSL world junior champion isn’t nearly as accomplished others in the field, but no one knows the Tahitian waves better than the 24-year-old local.

Olympic surfing format

Twenty-four of the world’s top-ranked surfers will have a chance to break waves twice at the 2024 Paris Summer Games. Round 1 winners will receive a bye to Round 3 while the 2nd and 3rd place surfers must face off in a knock-out Round 2. From there, competitors go head-to-head with winners advancing and losers eliminated through the quarterfinals, semifinals, and into the bronze and gold medal matches.

Americans rank 1 and 2 on tour

Caitlin Simmers (+500) ranks No. 1 on the WSL championship tour. The 18-year-old’s won three out of eight events this season, with three other top-five finishes, and sits nearly 6,000 points ahead of all other surfers in the standings. Fellow American Caroline Marks (+600) is currently No. 2 in the WSL rankings. She’s placed top five in all but one event this year and was victorious at the El Salvador Pro in early June.

Rounding out the U.S. women’s surfing team is reigning Olympic champion Carissa Moore (+1000). The five-time world champion’s had a limited competition schedule , only surfing in two of eight events this season. However, she placed fifth at the 2024 Tahiti Pro.

Other contenders

Brisa Hennessy (+600) from Costa Rica, Brazil’s Tatiana Weston-Webb (+800), Australian Molly Picklum (+900) and France’s Johanne Defay (+1400) all rank top seven in the WSL standings.

Best Bet

Caitlin Simmers (+500) has dominated the WST tour all season and we wouldn’t count out an experienced champion like Carissa Moore (+1000) either. One of these two Americans will top the podium this summer.
