Amanda Serrano returns to the ring this Saturday to defend her WBA, IBF and WBO featherweight titles against Nina Meinke. For the second fight in succession, Serrano will contest a fight over the traditional championship distance of 12 three-minute rounds. It is a stand that has cost her the WBC title, with the sanctioning body stripping her of the title ahead of her last bout against Danila Ramos. Considering the WBC awarded a world ranking to Francis Ngannou, who had lost his only professional fight, perhaps the sanctioning body isn’t to be taken seriously.

Here’s everything you need to know about the next chapter in Serrano’s story.

The Lowdown

Serrano

‘The Real Deal’ has been fighting her most prominent battle outside the ring lately. Serrano has been campaigning for women’s boxing to standardise championship fights over 12 three-minute rounds. It is a noble pursuit that has already cost her the WBC featherweight crown, when the governing body refused to sanction her trailblazing 12-rounder with Danila Ramos.

But Meinke has signed on the dotted line for a 12-round fight and the IBF, WBA and WBO remain willing to play ball. Serrano has acknowledged that in order to secure certain fights, such as a rematch with Katie Taylor, she would be willing to fight over 10 rounds. But these championship-distance fights are her preference as she looks to build an enduring legacy of innovation.

This particular bout shouldn’t trouble Serrano too much. Meinke is a deserving contender, but a step below some of the big name scalps on the Puerto Rican’s record. This bout represents a huge homecoming for Serrano as she fights in her home nation. Expect her to emerge victorious to rapturous cheers from her compatriots.

Meinke

The German star is no stranger to mixing with the best. Meinke lost via seventh-round TKO to Katie Taylor in just her seventh pro fight. She has incurred two losses since then, dropping decisions to Elina Tissen and then-IBF champion Sarah Mahfoud.

Meinke is a former European champion and has won her last six fights since coming up short for Mahfoud’s world title. But the 30-year-old usually comes up short against the best. Serrano is a record-setting, pound-for-pound great. Barring a miracle, it seems likely the Puerto Rican will retain her unified featherweight crown.
