The No. 7 Alabama Crimson Tide (4-1, 1-1 SEC) will host the South Carolina Gamecocks (3-2, 1-2 SEC) at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Alabama on Saturday, October 12, 2024. Kickoff is set for 12:00 PM ET and the game will be televised on ABC/ESPN+.

This SEC matchup carries significant implications for both teams as they look to bounce back from recent losses and gain momentum in conference play. Alabama enters as a heavy 21.5-point favorite, with the over/under set at 50.5 points.

The Crimson Tide are seeking redemption after a shocking 40-35 upset loss to Vanderbilt last week, while South Carolina aims to rebound from a 27-3 drubbing by Ole Miss.

Alabama vs South Carolina Prediction

Both Alabama and South Carolina come into this matchup licking their wounds from disappointing performances last week. The Crimson Tide’s vaunted defense was shredded by Vanderbilt for 418 total yards, continuing a troubling trend of defensive struggles.

Alabama has allowed a staggering 937 yards of offense over the past two games, something we’d never see under Nick Saban. Meanwhile, South Carolina’s offense sputtered against Ole Miss, managing just three points and 313 total yards.

Despite their recent setback, Alabama’s offense remains lethal. Quarterback Jalen Milroe has been efficient, completing 73.4% of his passes for 1,274 yards, 11 touchdowns, and only two interceptions.

The emergence of freshman wide receiver Ryan Williams has been a revelation, as he leads the nation with 28.6 yards per catch and has already racked up 544 receiving yards and six touchdowns.

South Carolina’s offense has shown potential this season, notably hanging 33 points on LSU earlier in the year. The return of dual-threat QB LaNorris Sellers and running back Rocket Sanders from injury should provide a spark against an Alabama defense that has struggled against mobile quarterbacks.

However, the Gamecocks’ secondary was exposed last week, allowing Ole Miss quarterback Jackson Dart to ball out through the air. This does not bode well against an explosive Alabama passing attack averaging 20.4 yards per completion.

I think Alabama’s offensive firepower will be too much for South Carolina to contain here. While the Tide have covered the spread in five of their last seven games at home, my best bet is Alabama’s -12.5 first-half spread as they look to make a statement after last week’s loss.

Alabama vs South Carolina Odds

Alabama opened as a 20.5-point favorite, and the line has since moved to -21.5, suggesting sharp money on the Crimson Tide. The implied probability of an Alabama victory based on the moneyline (-1800) is approximately 94.7%.

South Carolina enters as a significant underdog at +1000, implying just a 9.1% chance of pulling off the upset. It’s worth noting they were only 6.5-point dogs against LSU earlier in the season, covering the number by

Team Spread Moneyline Total
South Carolina +21.5 (-110) +1000 Over 50.5 (-110)
Alabama -21.5 (-110) -1800 Under 50.5 (-110)

The over/under of 50.5 points shows the potential for a high-scoring affair, given Alabama’s potent offense and recent defensive struggles. However, the total has dropped slightly from the opening line of 51.5, possibly due to concerns about South Carolina’s ability to contribute to the scoring after last week’s poor showing.

CFB public betting trends heavily favor Alabama, with 68% of bets backing the Crimson Tide to cover the spread. This lopsided action, combined with the line movement towards Alabama, suggests that both the public and sharp bettors are expecting a dominant performance from Kalen DeBoer’s squad.

Alabama vs South Carolina Head to Head

This will be the 17th meeting between Alabama and South Carolina, with the Crimson Tide holding a commanding 13-3 advantage in the all-time series. The teams last faced off in 2019, resulting in a 47-23 Alabama victory.

South Carolina’s last win against Alabama came in 2010, a memorable 35-21 upset of the then-No. 1 ranked Crimson Tide. However, that victory stands as an outlier in recent history, as Alabama has won seven of the last eight matchups between these programs.

2010-10-09 Columbia South Carolina 35-21

The Gamecocks have struggled mightily against ranked opponents recently, losing their last 7 games against AP Top 25 teams. Conversely, Alabama has been nearly unbeatable at home against unranked opponents, winning 79 consecutive such games at Bryant-Denny Stadium – the longest streak in 30 years.

While historical trends heavily favor Alabama, it’s worth noting that both teams have shown vulnerabilities this season. Alabama’s defense has been uncharacteristically porous, while South Carolina has demonstrated the ability to put up points against quality opponents when healthy.

The return of key offensive players for the Gamecocks could make this a more competitive matchup than the odds suggest, but Alabama’s home-field advantage and offensive firepower make them the clear favorite in the Saturday CFB odds.
