Adams vs Veron Predictions: Olympian Veron’s time is now

Brandon Adams squares off with Francisco Daniel Veron this Friday, August 30. The fight takes place at the Overtime Elite Arena in Atlanta, on the undercard of Elijah Pierce vs Jose Sanmartin. The event will be screened live on DAZN.

Here are my Adams vs Veron predictions ahead of this crossroads clash.

Adams was once on the verge of the summit of his sport. ‘Cannon’ faced off with then-WBC middleweight champion Jermall Charlo back in 2019. Adams was on the wrong end of a wide unanimous points decision, but his awkwardness and defensive silk posed some tricky questions for the champion. It was a creditable display that it looked like the Californian could build upon.

That mission went well initially. A knockout win over Sanny Duversonne set up an exciting clash with then-unbeaten star Serhii Bohachuk. Adams knocked out the touted Ukrainian in eight rounds, solidifying another run at the world title. The fact Bohachuk went on a three-year unbeaten to win the WBC interim strap demonstrates what a fine win this was.

The victory should have set Adams up for another title tilt. Instead, he spent three years on the sidelines just when his stock was at a peak. While the reasons for this absence were unclear, Adams had previously been sidelined between 2015 and 2018 due to contractual issues. Upon his return he won Season Five of boxing reality show The Contender. A win over Shane Mosley Jr. in the final helped secure his 2019 shot at Charlo’s belt.

Adams returned from this latest lengthy break in April. The American stopped the 13-2 Ismael Villarreal to jumpstart his career. That was his debut for Overtime, a company that uses competitive matchmaking, social media content and extra rounds in the event of a draw to stand out in a crowded market. Think Misfits Boxing but with legitimate boxers rather than YouTube creators and OnlyFans girls.

He faces another man making his second appearance in this domain. Argentina’s 2020 Olympian Veron is quite a coup for this growing organisation. ‘Bebu’ is unbeaten, with just one draw tainting his 15-fight record. The 25-year-old’s level of competition has steadily increased, having moved on from journeyman opponents to fellow prospects or ambitious fighters with only a loss or two on their ledger.

Adams is the finest fighter that Veron has met as a professional. One feels this fight will show what Veron is truly made of as he looks to walk the difficult path from Olympic star to professional standout. Adams may be a few years removed from his peak, but his wins over Bohachuk and Mosley prove his mettle. Going the distance with Charlo fortifies his claim as a quality operator.

This fight could be won in a number of ways. Both men can hit, without being renowned knockout artists per se. Adams has stopped 16 of the 24 men he has defeated. Veron has knocked out 10 of his 14 victims. Intriguingly, despite the experience gap, both men have been 10 rounds or more on just two occasions each. Adams has lost both bouts across that distance, to Charlo and former title contender Willie Monroe Jr. Veron has beaten Angel Ruiz Astorga and Timur Kerefov over the 10 round distance. While Adams has faced the better competition, it is interesting to note that he has not excelled in longer fights.

The idea of crossroads fights is a well-worn cliche, but this really is one. A 35-year-old who used to reside in the world rankings against an up-and-coming Olympian. Both men have it all to lose in this well-matched bout.

Adams is a 4/6 favourite to demonstrate the skills that took him to a title shot and get the win. Veron is 6/5 to pull off the upset. If there is a draw the bout will go to an overtime round.

Adams vs Veron Prediction

Despite being a slight underdog here, I like Veron in this one. Pierce has not had a tough fight in a long time and this certainly fits that bill. Veron has been far from flawless as a pro, but he has shown enough to mark himself out as one to watch.

I feel Veron will score the victory here, perhaps consigning Adams’ top-level career to the history books in the process. My pick is Veron at 6/5.
