Accrington Stanley vs Stockport Prediction: Hatters to come out on top

Accrington Stanley welcome Stockport County to the Wham Stadium on Tuesday (19:45, Sky Sports+) for their first Bristol Street Motors Trophy match of the season. Everton Under-21s lead the way in Group A currently, having beaten Tranmere Rovers a fortnight ago.

Accrington have started the League 2 campaign slowly, with just two points from their opening four matches, while Stockport are the League 1 leaders with 10 points after the same amount of fixtures. Read on for my Accrington vs Stockport prediction.

Both teams to score is marketed at 4/6 and over 2.5 goals is on offer at the same odds.

Team News

Sonny Aljofree, a loan arrival from Manchester United in the summer, is not available for selection for Accrington due to being cup-tied. The defender featured for the Red Devils in their 3-2 victory over Barnsley in Group F.

Aljofree is still waiting to make his debut for the ‘Owd Reds, having missed the weekend’s draw with Colchester United as the result of being a deadline day arrival and therefore not registered in time.

Manager John Doolan does have another Premier League loanee to call upon in Zach Awe of Southampton, who could feature in defence once again.

For Stockport, they are missing Crystal Palace loanee Tayo Adaramola, who has been sidelined since picking up an injury in pre-season, and he still appears to be a few weeks away from being able to make his Hatters debut.

Their star loanee Louie Barry could feature in attack again, having already netted three goals in the league. Isaace Olaofe came off the bench in the weekend’s draw with Mansfield Town and he could return to the starting lineup for this cup match.

Odin Bailey and Jack Diamond were unused substitutes in that match and they will be pushing for a start on Tuesday night.

Stockport to win to nil @ 11/5

Accrington are still waiting for their first win of the season in all competitions, and as one of the favourites for relegation in League 2, their disappointing start is only reaffirming that belief. They have already conceded 14 goals in five matches across all competitions so their defence is incredibly vulnerable.

This is not ideal when they are facing the League 1 leaders who have a potent goalscorer on their hands in Barry. The Hatters as a whole have produced nine goals in all competitions, and they could extend this tally further at the Wham Stadium on Tuesday.

Dave Challinor’s side have enjoyed an excellent start to the season, and to lead the way into September  is a credit to the work that the manager and his players have put in.

So much has been made of the squad and depth that promotion favourites Birmingham City have attained over the summer, but Stockport themselves have plenty of options to choose from, which should aid them in all their endeavours this term.

As the wait stretches for their first win, the confidence in the Accrington players will decrease further, and I don’t see them ending their rut against Stockport, who are flying at the moment.

I predict that this will be a comfortable victory for Challinor’s men, and I believe that backing Stockport to win to nil is a sensible selection.

Stockport to win to nil at 11/5 Stockport to win both halves @ 4/1

I am that confident in Stockport winning this match that I think they are worth backing to win both halves. Barry and Kyle Wootton have three goals each in all competitions so far, and if they both feature, they will carry a huge goal threat. They could even win this match themselves for the Hatters.

Then when you factor in the likes of Jayden Fevrier and Olaofe against this frail Accrington defence, then you think there could be plenty of goals in store for the visitors.

This market has landed twice already for Stockport this campaign, and I think we could see it deliver for a third time here.
