Yashasvi Jaiswal’s modest weakness against away-going deliveries has been called up by Aakash Chopra.

Who is confident that the young woman can overcome the problem by putting in the necessary effort.

On Day 1 of the second Test between India and the West Indies in Port of Spain Trinidad, on Thursday, July 20, Jaiswal made 57 runs off 74 deliveries. With Virat Kohli (87*) and Ravindra Jadeja (36*) at the crease, the visitors finished the day at 288/4.

Chopra thanked Rohit Sharma and Jaiswal for providing India another strong start in a video posted on his YouTube account. But he elaborated on one aspect of the latter’s game that he would have to work on:

Both of the openers, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma scored half century. In the previous game, they opened with a partnership of more than 200 runs, and they did the same in this game with a partnership of more than 100 runs. Yashasvi is playing solid shots while batting well. He is a fantastic athlete.

“There is one thing, though. He feels a little uncomfortable with the outgoing delivery. The idea is that he will continue to improve, but those deliveries will now be bowled to him more frequently, so he will need to make some advance preparations for that, which I am confident he will do. He plays that type of game.

Jaiswal handed up a handful of difficult chances that the West Indies fielders missed when he poked at deliveries outside the off-stump and was occasionally beat. Jason Holder’s bowling eventually resulted in him being caught at deep gully.

Aakash Chopra said of Rohit Sharma, “The love he has developed for leaving or defending deliveries was seen here as well”

Rohit Sharma was praised by Aakash Chopra for keeping up his passion for Test cricket, saying:

Let’s talk about Rohit’s passion for leaving or defending deliveries. He displayed this enthusiasm here as well, albeit with a little more aggression. He was smashing sixes off short balls while playing a little erratically.

The former cricket player turned broadcaster provided an explanation for why the Indian captain appears to take a little extra time playing his shots:

“What gives him that extra time? It is a really straightforward tale.

Someone once told me that much like how you always get at the train station to pick up someone before it leaves. Batting and catching work the same way. Prior to the ball arriving, you should be in the proper position. The person who can do that is Rohit Sharma.”

Chopra continued:

After a light forward press, he will simply wait. The back foot stays in place if the ball is short after that. From there, he simply pivots and hits a six or a four. He thereby conveys the appearance that he has more time. There is never any additional time.

With Jaiswal, Rohit put together a 139-run opening-wicket partnership while scoring 80 runs off 143 deliveries. Jomel Warrican dismissed him just as he appeared to be on his way to a second straight century.
