RS21 stands for Residual Sugar 21. With 21 grams per litre of residual sugars in the wine. Fermentation stopped early (yeasts, responsible for fermentation eat sugar and produce alcohol). While the sugar may seem high, there’s more than enough acidity to balance things out and produce a style that works so well with food.
Castle Rock Estate, RS21, Riesling, Porongurup, 2024
Pale straw to lemon colour. The sugar gives an immediate lift with lime brûlée notes along with guava, pink grapefruit, cinnamon, crab apple, lilies and an ocean pool refreshment. The palate sleek and supple. Plenty of pink apple flesh and acid bite with the sugar rounding out edges to an almost musky tone. Fine persistence of flavour and plenty of carry. A very fine (non-Germanic) example of a medium/half dry style.
