  • By Admin

The Edmonton Oilers (2-4-1) host the Pittsburgh Penguins (3-4-1) in a cross-conference NHL matchup on Friday, October 25, 2024, at Rogers Place. Puck drop is set for 9:00 PM ET, with TV coverage on Sportsnet West and ESPN+.

The NHL odds heavily favor the Oilers at -220 on the moneyline, while the Penguins are +180 underdogs. The total is set at 6.5 goals, with the over juiced at -115.

Here is our Penguins vs Oilers prediction for Friday Night Hockey.

Penguins vs Oilers Prediction

Both teams enter this matchup struggling to find consistency. The Oilers are looking to bounce back from a 3-2 overtime loss to Carolina, while the Penguins aim to snap a three-game losing streak after falling 4-3 in a shootout to Calgary.

Edmonton’s offense has been uncharacteristically quiet, averaging just 2.00 goals per game. However, Connor McDavid showed signs of life with two goals in their last outing. The Oilers power play is due for positive regression, currently converting at a mere 10.5% rate.

Pittsburgh’s defense has been their Achilles’ heel, allowing 4.25 goals per game (30th in the NHL). Their goaltending situation remains unsettled, with Tristan Jarry sent back to Pittsburgh to “reset his mindset.”

The Oilers have dominated this matchup recently, winning six straight against the Penguins, each by at least three goals. Given Pittsburgh’s defensive woes and Edmonton’s potent offense due for a breakout, the over is my best bet.

Edmonton’s 5-on-5 offensive metrics suggest positive regression is coming, while Pittsburgh has seen the over hit in four of their last five games overall and five of their last six road games.

Friday Night Hockey Pick:

  • Over 6.5 Goals (-115)

Penguins vs Oilers Odds

Team Puck Line Moneyline Total
Pittsburgh Penguins +1.5 (-175) +180 Over 6.5 (-115)
Edmonton Oilers -1.5 (+145) -220 Under 6.5 (-105)

The Oilers are heavy -220 favorites, which implies a 68.75% probability of victory. This heavy favoritism stems from their recent dominance in the head-to-head series and the expectation that their offense will soon return to form. The Penguins, at +180, have an implied win probability of 35.71%.

Edmonton’s odds reflect their superior talent and home-ice advantage, despite their slow start. Conversely, Pittsburgh’s underdog status is a product of their defensive woes and road struggles against Western Conference opponents (0-7 in their last seven such games).

The Oilers opened as the preseason favorites in the 2025 Stanley Cup odds, but have seen their odd slip to +800 despite remaining favored. Pittsburgh, meanwhile, is a massive +7000 longshot.

Player Props

Given my prediction of a high-scoring affair, it’s worth tapping into the player props market to compliment your picks. Here are some plays I’ve locked in:

Connor McDavid Over 1.5 Points

McDavid has historically torched the Penguins, recording over 1.5 points in five of their last six meetings. With Pittsburgh’s defensive issues, the Oilers’ captain should have ample opportunities to continue this trend.

Evgeni Malkin Over 0.5 Assists
Malkin leads the Penguins with nine assists in eight games. He’s been their most consistent offensive producer and should find opportunities to set up teammates against an Oilers defense allowing 3.86 goals per game.

Zach Hyman Over 3.5 Shots
Hyman’s shot volume has decreased this season, but he’s still averaging 6.41 shots per 60 minutes at 5-on-5. The Penguins are allowing the fourth-most shots per game (33.3), providing Hyman with a prime opportunity to surpass this total.

Sidney Crosby Over 0.5 Points
While Crosby has had a slower start by his standards, he’s too talented to be held off the scoresheet consistently. The Oilers’ defensive struggles present an excellent opportunity for Crosby to get back on track.

PIT vs EDM Injury Report

Evander Kane is out for the Oilers with an abdominal injury. The Penguins sent goaltender Tristan Jarry back to Pittsburgh, leaving Alex Nedeljkovic and Joel Blomqvist as likely options for Friday’s game.

The Oilers are overdue for an offensive explosion, and they get a golden opportunity against the struggling Penguins’ defense. Expect Edmonton to exploit the mismatch and for this game to fly over the total.
