Kusama For Kids: A Colourful Summer Experience at NGV

  • By Admin

Melbourne families are in for a special treat at NGV International this summer with the exciting Kusama for Kids exhibition, starting 15 December 2024.

A playful companion to the broader Yayoi Kusama exhibition, this interactive experience is designed to engage and inspire children, offering a fun, hands-on approach to contemporary art. Best of all, it’s free! It’s the perfect way to introduce your little ones to the colourful world of Yayoi Kusama, one of the most influential artists of our time.

Kusama For Kids – Yayoi Kusama Exhibition 2024

We are big fans of Yayoi Kusama and amongst our Tot team, we’ve been to several of her exhibitions throughout Australia over the years.

At the heart of Kusama for Kids 2024 is the captivating installation The Obliteration Room (2002 – present), an immersive art project that encourages young visitors to get creative.

The space begins as a pristine, all-white replica of a typical home interior, complete with furniture and everyday objects. But here’s where the fun starts: kids (and adults!) are invited to transform the room by sticking multicoloured polka dots on every surface.

As the room fills with colour, it evolves into a dynamic, ever-changing canvas, showcasing how art can be interactive and inclusive.

A Unique Art Adventure for Families

Kusama For Kids connects directly with Kusama’s famous use of polka dots in her art, which symbolises infinity and the endless possibilities of artistic expression.

By allowing kids to be part of this process, NGV is not only introducing them to contemporary art but also giving them the chance to become artists themselves.

Parents will love how this exhibition balances art and play, providing the perfect blend of learning and fun.

Watching the room change over time as families add their own polka dots is a great way for kids to understand how art can evolve and how they can contribute to a shared creative experience.

It’s a great opportunity to make a day of it, and with a wide variety of activities throughout NGV, you’ll find something for every age group to enjoy.
