The two touchdown spread is a far cry from where this game opened back in the summer. Texas was an 8-point favorite at that moment, and then were listed as the 14.5-point chalk in the college football Week 7 opening odds. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 pm ET at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, TX, with ABC providing the broadcast coverage.

Quinn Ewers Set to Return

Both programs were idle last week, and saw their respective stocks rise following the flurry of major upsets. The extra rest was just what the doctor ordered for Quinn Ewers, who’s set to return on Saturday as the Longhorns starter.

Ewers hasn’t played since Week 3 due to an abdominal injury. He was an early top-contender in the Heisman Trophy odds, throwing for 691 yards and 8 TD, while leading Texas to three blowout wins. Archie Manning looked like a future NFL star in Ewers’ absence, but the Longhorns didn’t waste any time reinstating Ewers as the starter once he got a clean bill of health.

The junior QB is 1-1 in two career starts versus the Sooners with 5 TD and 3 INT. He led Texas to a 49-0 drubbing of OU back in 2022, and then was on the losing end of a 34-30 result last year.

Oklahoma vs Texas Early Prediction

Regardless of who’s been starting at QB in 2024, the Longhorns have barely broken a sweat. Texas has won all five games by at least 19 points, outscoring their opposition 190-35 overall. They rank top-10 per SP+ on both sides of the ball, and boast the second shortest price in the College Football playoff odds.

Oklahoma meanwhile, is best known for its defensive prowess. The Sooners rank top-12 in the country on that side of the ball, yielding less than 16 points per outing. They have enough future Sunday stars to make life difficult for Ewers and Co., but the question is can they keep up on offense.

Oklahoma vs Texas – Last 5 Matchups

Date Result
Oct. 7, 2023 OU 34-30
Oct. 8, 2022 TEX 49-0
Oct. 9, 2021 OU 55-48
Oct. 10, 2020 OU 53-45
Oct. 12, 2019 OU 34-27

Oklahoma has been held to 16 points or less twice, and rank outside the top-50 in scoring. They’re 113th in total offense and in the process of breaking in a new quarterback. The silver lining is that the bye week came at a good time. It gives them more time to prep freshman QB Michael Hawkins Jr, who’ll make his second career start on Saturday. Hawkins is a true dual threat option, and reinforcements might also be on the way.

Head coach Will Venables says wideout Deion Burks and running back Taylor Tatum could return, which would reinstate two of the Sooners most explosive play makers.

Bettors clearly believe Oklahoma can keep this matchup within striking distance and I agree. We could easily see this line shift below the key number of 14, so if you want to back OU do so now. Rivalry games, much like divisional contests in the NFL, have a tendency to be tight regardless of any talent discrepancy. It means just a little bit more to each program, and the underdog tends to rise up. Expect that to be the case on Saturday.

  • Oklahoma +14 (-110)
