Football is certainly a cash cow for the New York sports betting season.

The New York State Gaming Commission reported more than $69 million in gross gaming revenue for the week ending Sept. 15, with NFL and college football leading to the second most profitable week of New York sports betting since its launch in January 2022.

The total was just $2 million less than New York’s gross gaming revenue mark for a single week.

Football Driving Profits and Bets

The New York State Gaming Commission reported $478,247,364 in online sports betting handle for the week ending Sept. 15. This led to $69,198,231 in gross gaming revenues, the second most profitable week in state sports betting history. New York set its profit records for the week ending May 12, 2024, with $70,935,647 in gross gaming revenues.

NFL and college football drive profits and handle each fall, with states and sports betting operators typically experiencing the highest amount of activity and revenue during the seasons.

DraftKings topped FanDuel in total handle for the week, reporting $$184,345,077 in online sports betting handle compared with FanDuel’s $183,390,946. FanDuel, however, topped DraftKings in revenue for the week, reporting $35,147,714 in gross gaming revenue compared with DraftKings’ $23,608,757 total.

The New York State Gaming Commission releases handle and revenue reports for its eight live NY sports betting apps, Caesars Sportsbook, DraftKings Sportsbook, FanDuel, BetMGM, Fanatics Sportsbook, Bally Bet, Resorts World Bet, and BetRivers, at the conclusion of each week. WynnBET is currently not live.

ESPN BET is slated to come to New York soon after securing market access through a $25 million deal for WSI US, LLC, from Wynn Interactive Holdings. WynnBET is no longer operating in the state. However, PENN Entertainment CEO Jay Snowden said the new operator would launch in late August, prior to the start of the college football season. However, the first several weeks of college football and the NFL have already come and gone, while the state still has no access to ESPN BET.

The New York State Gaming Commission will consider PENN’s acquisition of WynnBET during its upcoming meeting on Monday, Sept. 23. If approved, it will pave the way for an ESPN BET launch in the state.

For the week of Sept. 15, the nine sportsbooks reported a total of $69,198,231 in gross gaming revenue. At New York’s 51% online sports betting tax rate, this resulted in $35,291,097 million in tax revenue.
