Leganes vs Athletic Club Prediction: Visitors to take the win

Promoted Leganes have found life tough upon their return to La Liga and things will not get any easier when they entertain Athletic Club on Thursday. 

Los Pepineros have taken just five points from as many matches this season while visitors Bilbao will be pushing for the Champions League places after last term’s fifth-placed finish.

Leganes duo Yvan Neyou and Renato Tapia are doubts for Thursday’s La Liga clash. 

Athletic Club will be without defender Yeray Alvarez and first-choice goalkeeper Unai Simon due to injury and the suspended Mikel Jauregizar.

 Leganes enjoyed a decent reintroduction to the Spanish top flight, digging deep to draw 1-1 with Osasuna before beating Las Palmas 2-1 in their first two league assignments. 

However, a subsequent three-game winless and scoreless streak has left them hovering above the relegation zone. 

Leganes drew with Real Valladolid, a team who have been thrashed 7-0 by Barcelona this season, before losing to Mallorca and Real Betis. 

And they face arguably their toughest opponents yet on Thursday night as Bilbao visit the Estadio Municipal de Butarque. 

It has also been a slow start to the season for the Basque visitors, although their fixture list has not been kind with matches against Barcelona, Valencia and Atletico Madrid in August. 

However, Bilbao resumed after the international break with a 3-2 win over Las Palmas, against whom the quality of their attacking players such as Nico Williams and Oihan Sancet shone through. 

The visitors’ attacking potency could again prove the difference against a Leganes side who have struggled in front of goal.

Leganes’s inability to find the net could prove profitable for punters, however. 

Backing under 0.5 Leganes goals on Thursday looks a worthwhile option as it will land if the game finishes in a 0-0 draw or Athletic Bilbao win to nil. 

The hosts have failed to score in their last three matches against Valladolid, Mallorca and Betis, with the latter restricting Leganes to only three shots and 36 per cent of possession. 

Leganes’s modest output in front of goal is nothing new.  

The Madrid-based club leaned on defensive resolve rather than attacking firepower as they earned promotion from the Segunda Division last term.  

From the end of March to mid-April Leganes reeled off four successive 0-0 draws in the second tier and a lack of goals could continue to hurt them among Spain’s elite.
