Lucky 15

It’s Day One of the ‘Glorious’ meeting at Goodwood, so it’s an easy decision to make this week as to where we’ll be looking for inspiration. Fantastic sport full stop, with Galway also galloping into view.

So, here’s our Lucky 15 tips for Tuesday July 30, with the sensational eight-race action on the Downs scheduled to kick in at 13:50.

Today’s Horse Races

13:50 – Tony Montana @ 12/1

Day One looks tailor-made for an each-way Lucky 15 to me, so that’s exactly the way I’m playing it, with some horses at decent prices that I hope can get ultra-competitive on Tuesday afternoon.

First up we have just such a conveyance, a four-year-old gelded son of Kingman arriving fresh from a career-best just 17 days ago. Tony Montana ran a blinder in the John Smith’s at York, going down by just over 2l to Enfjaar, who is almost certain to be favourite for this contest (we’re paying five places each-way).

‘Tony’ is 5lb better off with that scorer, and he’s only been nudged up a pound by the naughty old handicapper for such a fine run in defeat. After beginning his career with the Gosdens he’s now a resident at Michael Bell’s Fitzroy House yard, at Newmarket.

At four he’s got a stack of time to blossom further and I want to be on the right side of him today. David Egan rides, for Amo Racing.

14:25 – An Outlaw’s Grace @ 11/2

Richard Hannon, as did his father before him, loves having winners at this meeting. An Outlaw’s Grace is a talented twice-raced two-year-old that’s already tasted combat in a foreign field – a trip to Chantilly for a Group 2.

A smooth debut success at Salisbury was followed by a narrow defeat (less than 2l) in that heat en France, and the Dandy Man colt tackles another G2 here AND steps up a notch to 7f, which on his last spin looks a very good idea (‘kept on well but not pace to challenge‘).

Middleham Park Racing own An Outlaw’s Grace, and there should be some fair old scenes of celebration on course if he can get his head in front. Sean Levey rides.

15:00 – English Oak @ 10/3

A terrific-looking race for the G2 Lennox, and a massive improver tipped up to make the leap from handicaps into Group class.

English Oak won the Buckingham handicap at the Royal meeting in the manner of a Group performer by 3l. It resulted in his official rating soaring by nine spots up to 108, still well shy of the likes of Kinross (114).

The last-named however is just looking to me that he’s on the wane, now aged seven, after a sensational couple of years of success. English Oak at four is thriving like never before and I’m sure we’ve seen nothing like his ceiling just yet.

The son of Wootton Bassett can take this for ultra-ambitious owners Wathnan Racing, and James Doyle rides for trainer Ed Walker.

16:10 – Jm Jungle @ 10/1

A value shout for me in an absolutely wide-open affair (we’re paying four places each-way).

Jm Jungle is a four-year-old gelding, and he’s no stranger to success here at Goodwood. John and Sean Quinn train, and Jason Hart is in the plate. The horse is fairly consistent at this level, and ran a cracker in Ireland last time in a £50k heat, going under by just 2l.

He’s got a nice-looking racing weight of 8st 8lb, and connections are very shrewd in their pursuit of such prizes. He was successful here last August in a three-year-old race at this 5f trip and is just 2lb higher here.

That’s it – some decent chances hopefully, for our each-way L15 suggestion.

This is an example of a Lucky 15. If you can improve upon my selections (of course you can), then go for it!

The odds can fluctuate between publishing our pieces and race-time. As a guide, a £0.25p each-way Lucky 15 on today’s selections, at the prices, and assuming all four won, would return around £1,700 for your total £7.50 stake.
