Franz Wagner inks massive deal with Magic

Franz Wagner inks massive deal with Magic

After reaching the playoffs for the first time in four years, the Orlando Magic secured forward Franz Wagner to a five-year, $224 million rookie contract extension that can be worth up to $269 million.

Wagner could see his deal reach its maximum if he earns an All-NBA team selection. He’s coming off a productive year in which he averaged 19.7 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 3.7 assists while shooting 48.2 percent from the floor and 28.1 percent from beyond the arc.

It featured him joining Shaquille O’Neal, Dwight Howard, and Tracy McGrady in scoring more than 4,000 points before turning 23 years old. He also notched seven games of at least 30 points.

In his first three seasons, he holds career averages of 17.8 points while shooting 47.9 percent from the floor.

He played a key part in guiding the Magic to a 47-35 record, the team’s best record since the 2010-11 season. Orlando will continue to lean on him as a primary piece in the franchise’s quest for championship contention.

The front office recently secured big man Jonathan Isaac to a five-year, $85 million contract. The Magic also agreed to a three-year, $66 million with guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope to further fortify their backcourt.

The Magic’s next task is to hammer out a long-term deal with All-Star forward Paolo Banchero. Banchero is entering the third year of his four-year, $50.1 million rookie contract. The deal holds a fourth-year club option worth $15.3 million, which the team has until Oct. 31 to exercise.
