Scottie Scheffler favored to win his first British Open Championship

  • Scottie Scheffler (+450) is a heavy favorite to win his first British Open Championship
  • Rory McIlroy (+800) aims to bounce back from a US Open collapse and win his first major in a decade
  • The Open tees off from Royal Troon in Scotland on Thursday, June 18, 2024

Scottie Scheffler hopes to bookend his Masters championship with a Claret Jug. The world No. 1 has six victories this season but has never won a tournament outside North America.

Scheffler favored at Royal Troon

Royal Troon in Scotland is hosting The Open for the 10th time and first since 2016 when Henrik Stenson set the Open Championship record by shooting 20-under.

Scottie Scheffler (+450) has taken a well-deserved break since winning the Travelers Championship in a playoff back in June. The 27 year-old has six PGA Tour victories in ten starts this season. The two-time major winner tied for 23rd at last year’s British Open Championship after shooting back-to-back over par rounds.

Rory tuning up for The Open

Rory McIlroy (+800) is playing in this week’s Scottish Open, making his first appearance since choking at the US Open. The Northern Irishman hasn’t won a major title since the 2014 British Open, which was played at Royal Liverpool. McIlroy tied for fifth in 2016 at Royal Troon.

Bryson DeChambeau (+1400), the beneficiary of Rory’s collapse at Pinehurst, is coming off his first major championship at the U.S. Open.

Other top contenders

Xander Schauffele (+1400) secured his first major with a victory at this year’s PGA Championship. He finished runner-up at the 2018 British Open and triumphed at the 2022 Scottish Open, but has otherwise struggled at this event. Ludvig Aberg (+1800) is making his debut at The Open. The 24-year-old Swede finished runner-up at this year’s Masters and led the US Open after 36 holes.

Collin Morikawa (+2000) won the 2021 Open at Royal St. George and has played well at all three majors this year. That certainly hasn’t been the case for Jon Rahm (+2000), but the LIV Golf star has placed top-three in two of the past three British Opens.

Big name Longshots

Brooks Koepka (+3000) hasn’t been remotely competitive at majors this year. However, he has won five of them in his career and is riding high after his Florida Panthers raised the Stanley Cup.

Justin Spieth (+5000) has been mostly terrible in 2024, missing three cuts since The Masters. However, the three-time major champ has secured five top-10 finishes in his last eight starts at The Open.

Best Bet

Scottie Scheffler (+450) is impossible to bet against, but hard to bet for because of his short odds. We’ll pair a Scheffler ticket with Viktor Hovland (+2500), who placed third at the PGA Championship.
