Borussia Dortmund vs Newcastle Prediction: Away win for Geordies?

Borussia Dortmund are reeling after their 4-0 hammering at the hands of Bayern Munich in Der Klassiker. Next up they host Newcastle United, in the Champions League, just two weeks after beating them 1-0 at St James’ Park. Below we preview this gargantuan Group F clash, which kicks off at 17:45 on Tuesday 7th November. 

Team News

Emre Can missed the defeat to Bayern Munich at the weekend and looks to be out of this one as well, having picked up a hip problem in the reverse fixture. Meanwhile, Mateu Morey and Julien Duranville both have knee injuries.

Eddie Howe has a fair amount of injuries to deal with, which is what has made their recent form even more impressive. Dan Burn went off injured against Arsenal, while Jacob Murphy suffered a shoulder issue. They may join Alexander Isak, Sven Botman, Elliot Anderson and Harvey Barnes in the physio room.

An even match-up, according to the bookies. Both Dortmund and Newcastle are 6/4 for the win, while a draw is available at 23/10. BTTS is 8/15, while over 2.5 goals is just 4/6.

Anthony Gordon to score @ 11/4

One man who has come to the fore in recent weeks has been Anthony Gordon. With Alexander Isak out injured, we’ve seen Gordon start as the number nine in the 3-0 win over Manchester United, and then be moved into that position to great success against Arsenal. It was from that central role that the 22-year-old scored the controversial winner against the Gunners, while he was also seriously impressive against Manchester United in midweek. 

He’s a player who is gaining more and more confidence in the black and white shirt, and against a Dortmund side who were humiliated on home soil at the weekend, the England U21 international will fancy his chances of getting on the scoresheet again. The former Everton man is likely to start on the left-wing, where he can be just as dangerous, but if/when Callum Wilson is substituted, he will play down the middle. 

That makes the 11/4 on offer for him to score anytime excellent value in my eyes, against a fragile Dortmund back line. 

Newcastle United to win to nil @ 4/1

In the reverse fixture, Dortmund pulled off their gameplan to perfection to secure an important 1-0 win. However, this time around, I’m backing Eddie Howe’s men to gain revenge with a disciplined display of their own. Since that 1-0 win, Dortmund have conceded seven goals in their last three games and their defence hasn’t looked quite right.

Meanwhile, Newcastle have drawn one and won two since that defeat, winning back-to-back games without conceding a goal. Even with injury issues, it appears the squad has pulled together, and now heading to Germany, will be hopeful of pulling off a famous win. This will be a close encounter, but the Geordies can secure all three points.
