Team news
Tammy Beaumont and Lauren Filer, who played in the Ashes Test match but missed the T20I series, are back in the England squad. Filer is hoping to make her ODI debut in Bristol and fellow fast bowler Issy Wong is also pushing for a recall.
Australia are weighing up their ODI batting order, with Beth Mooney ready to drop down the order to allow youngster Phoebe Litchfield and captain Alyssa Healy to open.
Australia Women Fall of First Wicket Over 28.5 @ 8/11
England are full of confidence after winning the T20I series against Australia 2-1, but they still need a 3-0 clean sweep in the ODIs if they are to regain the Ashes.
That will not be easy given that Australia have won their last eight 50-over clashes with England, including a 71-run victory in last year’s World Cup final in Christchurch.
Opener Alyssa Healy smashed 170 in that game, sharing an opening stand of 160 with Rachael Haynes, and Australia are worth backing to put on at least 29 for the first wicket in Bristol.
Haynes has retired from international cricket, but Beth Mooney, who averages 52 in ODIs, and 20-year-old Phoebe Litchfield, who scored 78 not out and 67 not out in her first two games against Pakistan in January, are top-class replacements and England may struggle to make an early breakthrough on Wednesday.
Tammy Beaumont to be England Women Top Run Scorer @ 16/5
Tammy Beaumont warmed up for the Ashes with 201 against Australia A before scoring 208 and 22 in the Test at Trent Bridge and the England opener will be raring to go after missing the T20I series.
Beaumont honed her white-ball skills last week with an unbeaten 83 off 62 balls for The Blaze against Northern Diamonds in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy and she has great memories of the County Ground in Bristol, venue for the first ODI.
The Kent-born batter made 148 against South Africa in Bristol during the 2017 World Cup and was player of the match against India there in 2021, leading England to an eight-wicket win with an unbeaten 87 from 87 deliveries.
She made 49 in England’s 2017 World Cup victory over Australia at the County Ground, the highest score of the innings, and her other four ODI appearances in Bristol have yielded knocks of 42, 15, 44 and 58, so she is well worth backing to be the hosts’ top runscorer.
