St Helens legend Paul Sculthorpe previews Saints’ visit to the Halliwell Jones to take on rivals Warrington Wolves at 8pm on Friday 7th July.
Sculthorpe’s prediction for Warrington Wolves vs St Helens
- Saints to win by 12 or more points @ 11/8
It’s a massive couple of weeks for Paul Wellens and his Saints squad in the Betfred Super League.
This Friday, we face rivals Warrington Wolves at the Halliwell Jones Stadium – and then the following week it’s league leaders Catalan Dragons back at the Totally Wicked Stadium. These two weeks will no doubt have a major bearing on the standings come the end of the month.
Unlike Wire, the champions go into this huge game on the back of a dominant win against strugglers Castleford. I tipped us to win by 18 points or more and was spot on as Wello’s men ran out 22-0 victors in the end. It was never going to be a classic, but after that embarrassing defeat in Hull the week before it was imperative to turn up with a different attitude and the will to work hard.
James Bell continues to impress – and what an effort from Mark Percival who put in an outstanding, try-scoring performance less than 24 hours after becoming a dad for the first time. No doubt Percy was on a high, and his efforts showed. Many congratulations to him and his wife on their new arrival.
Winger Jon Bennison was the official Man of the Match though and the player who received the most plaudits from his gaffer. As he always does, Jon competed for everything, having a hand in the opening try by Sione Mat’autia before crossing the whitewash himself after the break.
Wello spoke after the game about the back five, including Bennison, and the difference it makes to the team when these guys catch the ball on the full and run the ball back with such intent.
Onto Friday and the Wolves, who have now lost five of their last six games including a Betfred Challenge Cup quarter-final. I was present for their defeat against Leeds Rhinos and they looked a shadow of the side that were so dominant at the beginning of the year.
Admittedly, they have lost some key players to Australia for numerous reasons and were without star man George Williams on Friday, but to be booed off by their own fans was frankly embarrassing.
I know from speaking to a few of the Wire players this week that they are well aware they have to turn things around quickly, and they see a challenge of the visiting champions as a great opportunity to do that.
There’s no doubt Warrington will try and start fast and gain confidence early on in the game, but after the last few weeks and a change in mentality, I think Saints won’t take any pity and will inflict another defeat on Daryl Powell and his team.
I’m going for a Saints win by 12 points or more which is 11/8 with title sponsors Betfred.
