Azelaic acid is a skincare ingredient that has been gaining popularity in recent years due to its numerous benefits for the skin and as such you may be starting to get a little curious about the ingredient and its purpose. From its clarifying benefits to its brightening abilities – it’s easy to see why Azelaic Acid has started to show up in serums and other skincare products.

What is Azelaic Acid?

Azelaic acid is a naturally occurring acid and is usually sourced from natural plants and crops like wheat, rye, and barley. It’s then extracted for topical use on your skin! Azelaic Acid isn’t a BHA (beta hydroxy acid) or an AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid) which are typically known for their exfoliating properties.

What are the benefits of Azelaic Acid for Skin?

Azelaic acid has been shown to help with many skin issues from pesky breakouts, to anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce redness, swelling and irritation. It’s also been shown to help with skin discoloration and hyperpigmentation as it helps to inhibit the production of abnormal melanin which can often be the cause of hyperpigmentation.

What skin types can benefit from Azelaic Acid?

Azelaic acid is an ingredient which can be used on all skin types, including sensitive skin. It’s particularly beneficial for those with acne-prone skin, rosacea, or hyperpigmentation however do not use on hyper-damaged, or peeling skin.

What concentration of Azelaic Acid is recommended for skincare use?

The concentration of Azelaic Acid used in skincare varies – you can find it in any range from 5% to 20%. As with all skincare products you incorporate into your routine – it’s best to start with a lower concentration and gradually increase as tolerated.
