There is a hectic Friday of racing in store with eight meetings and 54 races taking place across Britain and Ireland.
The starting point is Thirsk with Flat meetings also coming from Brighton, Fairyhouse, Bath, Goodwood and Haydock, while there are jumps fixtures from Market Rasen and Clonmel.
Amongst our Friday fancies is one for top apprentice Benoit De La Sayette on the evening card at Goodwood.
Selections
- Goodwood 17:15 – Nonsuch Lad @ 3/1
- Haydock 18:45 – King Of The Plains @ 5/6
- Thirsk 15:10 – Just Janet @ 6/1
Tip 1
Evening racing from Goodwood on Friday kicks off with an apprentice contest over nine furlongs and it may be a good spot for Benoit De La Sayette to showcase his class on NONSUCH LAD (3/1) for the Jim Boyle team.
The gelding was a dual winner on turf last season, scoring at Doncaster (1m2f, good) in August and at Sandown (1m2f, soft) the following month before running well on his final outing at Windsor in October.
Though he looked in need of the run on his comeback at Windsor in April, he caught the eye subsequently with his third-place finish at Sandown (1m2f, good). Having to pick his way through rivals from the rear, he’d surely have finished second in another stride or two.
De La Sayette rides now in this apprentice contest and, from an unchanged mark, if he can get a good early position, his partner appears capable of a win from his perch and, in doing so, justify their position on the Most Napped table via the Betfred Betfinder.
Tip 2
The GPW Employee Ownership Trust Novice Stakes at Haydock can go to Charlie Johnston’s KING OF THE PLAINS (5/6).
The Roaring Lion colt shaped nicely on debut at Chester’s May Festival over this sort of trip, finishing a close third, and has only narrowly failed since at Yarmouth (1m3½f, good to firm) when held by 96-rated John & Thady Gosden-trained runner Ghara.
Oisin Murphy’s partner makes solid appeal on the strength of that latest run and is likely to find further improvement on this third racecourse start, which should make him the one to beat.
Charlie Appleby’s Ruling Dynasty won at Newcastle on the Tapeta in October on his second start but that form isn’t the strongest and, now a 4YO, he has to concede a stone and a half to the promising King Of Plains and that should prove tough.
Tip 3
JUST JANET (6/1) gets the chance to go one better after missing out at Leicester 10 days ago for the David O’Meara yard.
The Zoustar filly was a dual winner in 2022, scoring on grass at Wetherby and on the all-weather at Southwell, and looked in need of her Pontefract comeback in early May.
She built on that at Leicester (6f, good to firm) and perhaps might have got the win there had she got into full cry a little sooner.
It did, however, suggest that this mark of 72 is within reach and she’s due a 1lb rise in the ratings after this outing. Danny Tudhope’s filly dons a pair of first-time cheekpieces here and looks a value call in this Betfred Extra Place Race (four places).
