Suns find Monty Williams’ successor in former Lakers coach Frank Vogel

Suns find Monty Williams’ successor in former Lakers coach Frank Vogel

After a lengthy search process, the Phoenix Suns have finally found their next head coach.

The Suns have signed Frank Vogel to a five-year contract that will mark his return back to the NBA sidelines. Vogel beat out the likes of Doc Rivers and Suns assistant coach Kevin Young for the vacant position.

Phoenix was also reportedly in talks with Nick Nurse before taking the Philadelphia 76ers. Vogel steps back into the league after spending all of the 2022-23 campaign on the outside looking in after his departure with the Los Angeles Lakers.

It will mark his fourth NBA head coach stop after previous stints with the Lakers, Indiana Pacers, and Orlando Magic. Vogel spent three years with Los Angeles, where he guided the franchise to an NBA title and two playoff appearances.

In his six seasons with the Pacers, he led the team to five playoff appearances with two conference finals trips. Vogel struggled in his two years with Orlando, failing to reach the postseason while losing more than 50 games in each campaign.

Throughout his coaching career, he’s developed a strong reputation for his defensive approach. He has had the NBA’s top-rated defense three times (twice with the Pacers, once with the Lakers).

Vogel is a proven commodity that the Suns need to help push them into NBA title contention. Phoenix already possesses a strong core group led by Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Chris Paul.

With a head coach finally in place, the organization can focus on rebuilding the roster.
