Jannik Sinner to Dominate on Grass?

Kicking off the 2024 season with a relatively comfortable Australian Open victory, Sinner has dominated all year. The Italian has won 4 singles titles to place himself atop the rankings for the majority of the year. 39-3 across all competitions, his only 3 blemishes were losses to Carlos Alcaraz in the French Open semifinals and Indian Wells semifinals (both clay courts) and Stefanos Tsitsipas at the Monte-Carlo Masters (also clay).

He enters Wimbledon as the winner of the Halle Open. The grass tournament in Germany is used by many pros as a warm-up to The Championships. Sinner has won 11 of his last 12 grass matches, with the lone loss of course being his defeat to Djokovic last year at Wimbledon. In my eyes, he is the best player in the world and arguably the best on grass. His lethal serve game, combined with excellent play at the net, are ideal characteristics for a dominant grass court player.

At the current price, Sinner is the value play in this tournament. There are too many questions swirling around the remaining competitors. However, Sinner has an intriguing second round match looming against Matteo Berrettini. His fellow Italian counterpart specializes on the grass surface, so if you are to heed my advice and back Sinner at the 2024 Wimbledon, I would be patient. Take Sinner to win it all if he progresses to the third round, since we should get a similar price and with an early challenge behind him.

Should Your Wimbledon Picks Include Alcaraz or Djokovic?

Carlos Alcaraz shocked many by defeating both Daniil Medvedev and Novak Djokovic to win the Wimbledon last year. Considered as a clay court specialist, he beat the odds to not only win his first Wimbledon title but also retain his number one ranking at the time and become the first to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals in December. It took five sets to outlast the all-time great Djokovic, whose fitness didn’t quite hold up after a long tournament at the age of 36.

My hesitancy towards backing Alcaraz at this tournament stems from a stretch of somewhat lucky performances boosting his stock to an all-time high this year. Wins over Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev also took him 5 sets, falling behind two sets to one in each. His fortitude under the threat of defeat should be respected, but putting yourself in perilous situations time and time again does not bode well for future success. Eventually, Alcaraz’s luck will run thin.

Forever a candidate to win any major trophy, Novak Djokovic’s health is more precarious than ever before. Djokovic tore his meniscus in a match against Casper Ruud at the French Open just a month ago, and hasn’t played since. At this age, there is always the question of when he finally hits a brick wall, as the legendary Rafael Nadal has in the past year. That concern keeps me from backing him in any capacity at this tournament.

Best Tennis Bets: British Dark Horse in the Running to Win it All?

Jack Draper, a young southpaw by way of Ashtead, Surrey, is the likely heartthrob of Wimbledon this year for British fans. With a lethal backhand and lefty serve, he has the tools to be a top-10 player in the world. But health issues have continuously presented obstacles to his improvement. Those health issues often bleed into his ability to remain fit over 5-set matches, notably throwing up in his match against Marcos Giron at the Australian Open.

But hard work with a new trainer has reinvigorated his belief he can last long in five-setters, and that belief extends to a legendary tennis coach as well. Venus and Serena’s longtime trainer Jon Lee backed the young Brit to make some noise in this Wimbledon, saying he “is one of the tennis world’s best.” At just 22 years old, he still has plenty of time to fill into that role.

Draper is labeled as a dark horse going into this tournament primarily due to some impressive performances over top competition recently. Notably, he defeated Carlos Alcaraz on grass in straight sets just a few weeks ago. He also won the Stuttgart Open the week before, another grass tournament. Victories along the way to that title included Frances Tiafoe and Matteo Berrettini, enough to convince me to back him here for a maiden major title on home soil.
